An intermodal multicommodity routing problem with scheduled services
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study a multicommodity routing problem faced by an intermodal service operator that uses ground and maritime transportation. Given a planning horizon, a set of commodities to be picked up at their release times and to be delivered not later than their duedates, the problem is to decide on routes for these commodities using trucks and scheduled and capacitated maritime services at minimum cost of transportation and stocking at the seaports. Two mixed integer programming formulations and valid inequalities are proposed for this problem. The results of a computational study to evaluate the strength of the linear programming relaxations and the solution times are reported.

متن کاملSustainability SI: Multimode Multicommodity Network Design Model for Intermodal Freight Transportation with Transfer and Emission Costs
Intermodal freight transportation is concerned with shipping of commodities from their origin to destination using combinations of transport modes. Traditional logistics models have concentrated on minimizing transportation costs by appropriately determining the service network and the transportation routing. This paper considers an intermodal transportation problem with an explicit considerati...
متن کاملMinimizing greenhouse gas emissions in intermodal freight transport: an application to rail service design
Freight transport has undesirable effects on the environment. The most prominent of these is greenhouse gas emissions. Intermodal freight transport, where freight is shipped from origin to destination by a sequence of at least two transportation modes, offers the possibility of shifting freight (either partially or in full) from one mode to another in the hope of reducing the greenhouse emissio...
متن کاملA Service-Oriented Approach to Freight Routing in Intermodal Transport Systems
Determining optimal routes for given freight is a core decision in logistics. In intermodal logistics, freight routing has to consider the interfaces between different modes of transportation, such as hand-over offsets, load changes, and organizational procedures. We study this problem from the perspective of Service-Oriented Computing (SOC). We (1) propose representing intermodal transport sys...
متن کاملService network design with management and coordination of multiple fleets
We present a new optimization model for the tactical design of scheduled service networks for transportation systems where several entities provide service and internal exchanges and coordination with neighboring systems is critical. Internal exchanges represent border crossings necessitating changes of vehicles, while the coordination with neighboring systems represents intermodal operations. ...
